New XBLA Achievement Rules

Well, looks like things are going to change around the Xbox Live Arcade. Seems like Microsoft may be looking for a way to get more money out of arcade games and the DLC that goes with said games. It's already ridiculous enough that most arcade games that take about 4-5 hours to complete are 1200 points (15 dollars). Then a lot of those games get DLC for another measly 50 points which costs another 400 points (5 dollars).

Here's a look at the old rules for the XBLA (stolen from x360a):

OLD RULES
Base: 200 Gamerscore / Max of 20 Achievements
DLC: Up to 50 Gamerscore + 5 Achievements per Quarter (3 Max)
Total: Up to 350 Gamerscore / 35 Achievements

And now here's the new rules for the XBLA (also stolen from x360a):

NEW RULES
Base: 400 Gamerscore / Max of 30 Achievements
DLC: Up to 100 Gamerscore + 8 Achievements per Quarter (4 Max)
Total: Up to 800 Gamerscore / 62 Achievements

I guess only time will tell, but I don't see any games worth 400 gamerscore being 400 points or less...

If they do this its going to raise the price of all arcade games up to nearly 1600 MSP per game. I mean right now you can get 200GS for 800 MSP and I highly doubt that Micro$oft will keep the same price for more gamerscore.

Don't get me wrong, I'm always down for more gamerscore but if the price of the games goes up too much then I will definitely be thinking twice before buying an arcade game.

I'm a cheapskate myself, and many XBLA titles seem too over-priced for me. I always wait until they go on sale, and very rarely spend more than 800 MSP for one. However, I do think that with the length of XBLA titles they do deserve more than the standard 200 gamerscore currently allotted. To be quite honest, I haven't really spent too much time on any XBLA games because to me 200 gamerscore isn't worth the effort some take. I realize that can be blasphemy to XBLA game die-hards, but that's just always how I've felt.

Major Nelson only mentioned XBLA games to have an increase of Gamerscore from 200 to 400. Didn't realize that meant DLC too.

This could be good or bad, only time can tell for sure. It would be nice if this didn't affect the prices of games (DLC pricing is fine since I rarely buy arcade game DLC).

This is pretty much why I won't buy arcade games. There aren't that many that are worth the price.

All this brings back memories of when they released Halo 2. They threw in a metal case, a few extras and an additional $10 charge to a game that normally retailed for $50. Due to the game and the content, thousands of people paid the extra money. With that $50 discs became ancient history and the average price tag for all games became $60.

Sounds like MS is preying on the Gamerscore crowd again. What should be a nice cheap way to earn GS and experience new games really isn’t. This is why I shy away from these games for the most part.

I have very few XBLA games myself and can't see getting into them. The fact that the prices are going to rise just tells me that this is a money grab. Yes, they will expand the achievement base, but the games themselves are not going to be bigger or longer. If I am going to lay down $20.00 I am going to buy an older full version game not a brand new XBLA game.

You don't know that the games won't get bigger. 400 gamerscore is NOT the base gamerscore for all games now, games can still be made with only 200 being the base.

If they didn't offer more game for more money, people won't buy it.
