New Disc format and Your Xbox

You may or may not know about all the new updates coming to the 360 in Spring. Well Microsoft is doing one for a new disc format and not all Xbox 360s are compatible with the new updates due to incompatible firmware. The reason the problems may be occurring is that the impending update reflashes the system's DVD drive to be compatible with the new higher-capacity XGD3 disc format, set to start being used soon. Certain consoles apparently can not accept this format and they stop working. If your console is affected MS will be sending out emails for free replacement consoles and a 1 year of XBL subscription. They have a way to figure it out via XBL, but you can also notify them if you think yours is not up to par with the update.

This has been confirmed via their official Twitter account as well, its not like MS after all to do these kind of things. Very few consoles are believed to be affected, but we all would like a free slim 250GB I'm sure. Contact them via the Support page.

now see i was informed in another forum that only the ppl that beta tested the update were having this problem and yeah i have my elite that doesnt read any discs at all because the cd drive has gone out of it so if you are having a problem with it reading a disc then sounds like your disc reader is going out....your warranty if you still have one doesnt cover it but you can fix it yourself for about $50 and there is a step by step guide here somewhere that tells you how do fix it

That's because the update isnt out for everyone yet yesterdays update didn't do that.

I wouldn't prefer to get a new slim because with the wireless adapter I just made my prefect system, complete with decal :).
