Bayonetta Review
Looking at Bayonetta, some people might say "Its just like Devil May Cry", however I will enlighten you on a little something I found after further investigation, Bayonetta was directed by the same guy, Hideki Kamiya who was formerly employed with Capcom.
Taking the time to actually buy Devil May Cry 4 and play it to compare the two, I have to say Bayonetta's story confuses me just has much as DMC4 did. From what I played and could interpret as a casual gamer, it seems as if Bayonetta lost her memory and is slowly regaining it as you progress through the story. As you progress you learn about the "Umbra Witches" and "Lumen Sage" and a bunch of other nonsense that doesn't distract you at all from mindless hacking and slashing.
Cinematic sequences were quite unique to me, using film rolls in certain scenes to show the conversations between the characters. Granted the characters didn't move at all unless you include their hair and clothing blowing with the wind, it could come off as low budget to most but I for one liked it. It becomes rather humorous in latter parts of the story that I'm not going to mention. Let's just say it involves
a perverted pretty boy swinging around like Spiderman
The Combat system is pretty simple and is easy to catch on to much like Devil May Cry however you're given a counter known as "Witch Time" where if you dodge at the right time everything around you will move in slow motion giving you the pleasure of enjoying 10 - 15 seconds of complete advantage over your enemies. This was a big improvement compared to Devil May Cry where your dodging is but a side step which doesn't get you far at all.
Bayonetta's weapons are quite ... different, in combat you can pick up Angel Weapons from the enemies which all hold their own unique special to it and as you progress through the game you can unlock weapons such as a Katana, Giant Claws , a Whip (Very fitting), and Ice Skates. She can also initiate "Torture Attacks" against enemies where she can whip out many other weapons from out of nowhere such as a guillotine , Chainsaw , and a steel horse and chain for ... certain enemies , you have to play to know. Now if that wasn't enough, Bayonetta's entire outfit is made up of her own hair and performing certain move sets will not only send a giant foot composed of Bayonettas hair at the enemy, but the stronger the attack you make the more of Bayonetta's outfit comes off (Fan service? ... I think so)
Graphics were top notch in this game, from the epic prologue with you dropping down into the atmosphere to the boss fights you have in a tornado, to the epilogue when
you're taken back into space
Achievement wise this game CAN be considered an easy 1000, but a long one depending on how well your learning curve is. You have to beat various challenges , find all the treasure chest and the use of different weapons and accessories. There is also a CLIMAX BRACELET that players can unlock , making the hardest difficulty a joke
Overall , I recommend this game as a rental for sure. It was too short to really spend $60 on, no matter how awesome the game play was, the lack of levels and monsters wont give you much in replay value. This game was definitely a good way for 2010 to start with game releases and it can only get better.
Score (Mine Anyway): 9.5/10
