Videogames Outsell Movies

That's right folks. 2008 was a definite year of change, from Obama's Election; to the 360 getting new hardware. However, there has been more rumbling in the jungle than this. With all the high profile videogame releases last year, people turned away from their DVD drives; and toward their disc drives. Congratulations to the King of 2008: The Video Game Industry.

Videogames, over the course of 2008, outsold Blu-Ray and DVD. Combined. Of course, when taken into account people did indeed buy more movies than games. It always has been that way, always will be due to the price gap. But, with a gross industry gain of $32 million; videogames topped Blu-Ray and DVD by a margin of $3 million.

Sorry Mark, he still did better than you.

However, this is far from the death knell for DVD and Blu-Ray. With their starting $20-$30 price tag, they often lower to $10. Couple this with a huge selection of DVDs for under that price; videogames have a long way to go before outselling movies in units. But, as numerous people around the web have said; this is certainly a step forward.

But I leave you with this question, did they factor in digitally purchased videogame media? Or did they leave that portion of the market out? Until next time, adios and enjoy the games.

I don't think it's so much as video games are selling MORE than dvds I just think more people are burning copies of dvds and then you just see more of the game being bought. I didn't realize that many people would buy a movie game anyways (rather than renting it)

yea, most people can watch/burn dvds over the internet now, so they dont bother buying them....burning games is more harder, as MS (idk about sony or nintendo) will put the banhammer unto you

personally, regardless of the "comic to movie to game" or just the "movie to game" or even the "novel to game" i am always going to prefer the game. well... maybe not always, but in all likely-hood. that's just my style, my interest.

there are few games i'll pay 60 bucks for.
there are even FEWER movies i'll pay 20 bucks to see.
and yet, there you have it. i buy games, sometimes just from my gut feeling.
i've seen probably 20 or so movies in the theater total.
when it comes to buying movies, shit... maybe 10?
and most of those have been oldies. like... 6.99$ bargain bins.

i can't speak for any community as a whole, but in my opinion, you're going to get more bang for your buck, buying a video game, as opposed to going to/buying a movie that you may or may not watch twice.
