There is a power saving setting that allows downloads to continue downloading with the 360 turned off.

That setting has been around for quite some time now. I've always used it so I can download demos and that while I'm not home.
The funny thing is, with the new update, I have yet to be prompted to update my xbox and I was online for most of the day yesterday and most of last night.
