HOW TO FIX A DIRTY SPINDLE
Symptom
the drive sounds like its spinning but wont read the disc
this is one of two problems but we can narrow it down
heres how if its spins ups twice for just a second each time the laser might be burnt out or the spindles dirty
for now we'll say the Spindles Dirty
diagnosis
Dirty spindle causing the dvd not to spin as fast as it needs to therefore the drive cant read the disc
The Solution
remove the dvd drive and clean the spindle
the steps
1 remove the drive from your xbox using a xbox opeaning tutorial you find on youtube (one you understand)
2 flip the drive up side down and unscrew the four screws with a phillips screwdriver
3 remove the top of the dvd drive case
4 use your finger nail to scrape the dirt of the spindles black rubber ring
5 repalce the top back onto the drive
6 screw it back down
7 re install the drive in your xbox and close the xbox back up
if the drive continues not to work move on to the section below
HOW TO FIX A BAD LASER
Symptom
the drive sounds like its spinning but wont read the disc
this is one of two problems but we can narrow it down
heres how if its spins ups twice for just a second each time the laser might be burnt out or the spindles dirty
for now we'll say the lasers bad
diagnosis
BAD LASER - to test this Simply apply tough love to your xbox by (i know this sounds bad but trust me) Hitting it above where the dvd drive is not extremly hard but firmly
if by doing this the drive attempts to read the disc but fails repeatedly the laser is definatly bad and the drive needs to be replaced
The Solution
Replace the DVD Drive
fallow these steps to ensure you have bought the right dvd drive to replace it
WRITE STEPS 1-3's INFO DOWN FOR YOUR DRIVE
1 check the model of the drive mine was a lite-on DG-16d2s
2 check the HW Ver. mine was HW Ver. A0A1
3 Check The FW Ver. Mine Was FW Ver. 74850C
4 purchase a replacement drive which matchs what you got for steps 1-3
5 After you have you new drive your will need to remove you old one from your xbox(opening up the xbox is easy there are 1000's of tutorials on youtube find one you understand)
were gonna take a break so i can explain something very important
lite on drives like every on ther have a mother board on the bottem of the drive thats called a PCB BOARD which contains the information to allow the dvd Drive to work on your xbox
you can not just swap out drives you must keep the same PCB BOARD from you xbox to get the new drive to work but its a bit more complicated with light-on drives as the boards in these have wires permently attached to them that attach to the drive tray its self so we have to swap the laser and spindle brackets completely out and i will explain how to do this next please Grab a permenant marker it will help alot in the next few steps
first things first beforw you open either drive make an X on both the top drive cover and the bottem drive cover of the drive you pulled from you xbox and secondly make a dash - on the top case and bottom case of the new dvd drive its important so just do it
These steps are for the bad drive (I.E. The one you removed from your xbox)
6 use a standard phillips screw drive to remove the 4 screws on the bottom of the drive
7 now pull the case apart and place both halfs so the insides face up and put all screws in the bottom cover for safe keeping
8 flip the drive over and use your smallest precison flat head to remove the two small screws holding dow the green board - and carefully move it aside with out braking the wires attached you just need to get at the screws under it
9carefully pull the two small cables out of the green board and the larger on from the laser motor and it dosnt come off the green board
10use a t10 driver to remove the four large flat screws and place them in the bottom cover as well so we dont lose them
11 now simply pull out the whole thing it comes out as on big piece
now on to the new drive do this away from the first drive
12 use a standard phillips screw drive to remove the 4 screws on the bottom of the drive
13 now pull the case apart and place both halfs so the insides face up and put all screws in the bottom cover for safe keeping
14 flip the drive over and use your smallest precison flat head to remove the two small screws holding dow the green board - and carefully move it aside with out braking the wires attached you just need to get at the screws under it
15carefully pull the two small cables out of the green board and the larger on from the laser motor and it dosnt come off the green board
16use a t10 driver to remove the four large flat screws and place them in the bottom cover as well so we dont lose them
17 now simply pull out the whole thing it comes out as on big piece
now that there both apart take the laser assembly from the new drive and the tray housing and PCB BOARD from the old drive
18 place the new lase and spinndle assembly into the old tray housing with the PCB BOARD that came out of your xbox
19 screw it back in with the four big flat screws using yor T10 Driver
20 re-Insert the two smaller flat cables in to the green board
21 a little harder but insert the bigger cable back into the laser
22 place the PCB BOARD back int place and secure it with the two small screws
23 take the housings with the dash on them and place what you just did into them(keeps the spindle with a good magnet) after ofcourse takeing anscrews you had in the bottom cover out
24 and screw the tow back together
25 now reinstall the dvd drive and your good to go
sorry for the lack of pictures i will add them very soon to make this more user friendly
as well as i will add more repair guides for more drives in the near future as well as update exisiting ones with new issues and repair solutions thank you for reading my article enjoy i hope this helps anyone with problems
