I just spent 5 days at a conference for music educators and got way back into The Civil Wars. Incredible musicians, folky kind of music

Give these guys a listen. My brother turned me onto them recently and I dig their sound so much I already got tickets to see em in Columbus in September. They got a throwback soul/R&B sound with a few rocky tones. I can't help but think of Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, The Band, and Van Morrison a bit. They played Jazz Fest in New Orleans and on tour with Kings of Leon right now. They've been on Austin City Limits and just about every late night talk show

Really getting into these guys too lately. Like Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, they got a righteous Soul sound heavy with horns and Hammond organ. This white boy sings like Al Green. Their first album dropped in 2014 and a second came out last year.

Went down to Columbus for that Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats show Monday night. They put on one hell of a show. Discovered a new band I really dig when the local Columbus "psych trio," The Worn Flints, tore up the stage as a late addition opening act. They have a raw, driving, bluesy rock/psychedelic sound. They have a couple albums, a short EP, and a two track single release on iTunes. Their first album almost sounds like a different band but I really dig it as well. It's has a more prog rock sound. Almost shades of Jethro Tull or Yes as they have someone on flute a couple tracks, saxophone on another, as well as a female vocalist.

The new Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats album came out today! It's fantastic! I cannot recommend these guys enough. I got tickets to see them again when they come to Cleveland in June. Here's a radio show they did recently, talking about and playing a few songs from Tearing at the Seams.

Really been getting into some newer Soul revival artists. I've mentioned Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats. Seen em twice now and have tickets to a third show in Columbus next month. They've been touring nonstop! Pretty sure I already mentioned St. Paul & the Broken Bone too. They have a new album dropping next week, I believe. "Convex" is one of the prerelease tracks that are available.
Another really great newer Soul/Funk group I've been really into lately is Monophonics from San Fran. Their first couple albums are all instrumental funk. Their more recent stuff is some funky Soul that sounds right outta the 70's. They have a few fantastic covers in "Bang, Bang", and instrumental versions of "Summer Breeze" and "California Dreamin". One of my favorite originals of theirs is "Falling Apart."
A few other recent Soul/R&B artists with real classic sounds I've been into are Rafael Saadiq, Michael Kiwanuka (might recognize his tune that they use for the theme song on HBO's Big Little Lies), and Charles Bradley (may he RIP). Shame about Charles Bradley having to wait till his 50's to break big, only to die of cancer a few years later. you might recognize a few of his tunes. "Changes" is one of the best cover tunes I've ever heard. Aside from the Soul, I've been really digging Sturgil Simpson and his throwback outlaw country sound. His third album is amazing. I love the horns. Check out his rendition of "In Bloom".
Don't let anyone tell you there are no good new artists these days. Yeah, rap may have gone to shit but there's hope for the future.

Back to audiobooks myself. I am going through the DUNE series on Youtube. I have read them all some time ago but listening to them is an entirely different experience
