Yeah they work, and no you dont have to be rich to replace your xbox every time. All you need to do is fix and sell the broken one go to best buy and buy it there with their warrenty, and there you go take it back anytime it breaks and get a brand new one.

Intercoolers don't do much, putting fans over fans is not a good way to cool your 360. I've had my current 360 for over a year now, with no additional cooling and haven't had any problems, and I use and abuse my 360 everyday. Plus FYI if you tell MS that your 360 crapped out with a intercooler, like my friend did and they will tell you that you've voided you warranty. As long as your 360 is getting enough air through its vents you won't have a problem, if your 360 sits on a shelf with a bunch of stuff around it then you might have some issues.
Re: intercoolers and rrod
yah good point, another thing is my box last year stood verticall and it was completely by itself on the floor, not close to anything and when i got rrod 2 times its been on a shelf horizontally with hardly any airflow, that could be it too.

I never recommend using an inner cooler because that thing does two things; 1. It sucks dust and whatnot right into your 360 2. Most inner coolers are make by cheap companies and the power supply fuse can burnout real fast. I've seen it happen quite a few times. I recommend that first you keep your system horizontal, and in an open area. Also put on the 6 hour auto off.

A little add on to the guy above, the intercoolers also feed off your xbox's power supply, as there is no self supply you plug into the wall.

I know but you have to plug the cooler into the back of the 360 and the power cord into the cooler.. if you take a look at the cooler you can see the six fuse plugs.
