I try to play gears of war 2 online but i fail horibly. And to top it off, i dont know the game modes at ALL. Can anyone give me some tips?

Try the Training Grounds mode. Even though you'll be stuck fighting shitty bots, it will improve your skill.
Common Sense here: Use the lancer/hammerburst at long range and use the shotty at mid-to-close considering how powerful it is.
Pick up the grenades, wether it the ink's or frag's, they can get you kills if you plant them in smart spots.
Start playing KoTH or Annex first, from them having unlimited respawns, you will get more lifes and therefore be able to get more kills. And trust me, don't play execution or warzone until you think your good.

Practice. Try out the Training Grounds like xMike said. Learn to use the Shotty, everyone uses it even sometimes at long range.
