From everything I've read you can't use the transfer cable to transfer your data from an Xbox 360 S hard drive to another Xbox 360 S hard drive. So what option is there?

Just take the hard drive out of your old system and put it in the new one? Unless you're transferring from a 4 GB to a 250 or 320. Then you're kinda screwed. Maybe try saving it all the the cloud device and just use that?

If you have a external hard drive (like one for your computer), like a terabyte, you can transfer around 15 GB at a time. That is what I did, it took awhile but screw M$ for not adding one in the Gears 3 Console bundle. I refused to pay for another transfer cable, just sayin'. Hope this helps, Happy Gaming Everyone!

I ended up going the cheap route. I bought a cheapy usb flash stick for about 10 bucks and just did it that way. It didn't take to long to transfer the material.

I do have an external hard drive, but would I have to format it to get it to work on the xbox? I don't want to have to do that because it has a LOT of backup files/photos on it that I can't lose.

When I did this it was a brand new external hard drive so im afraid im not sure about your files/photos, but all I did was plugged it into my xbox and it did it for me(as far as taken 15 GB and only using it for my memory and not touching the rest of the hard drive). That would be your call however. sorry I cant be more help.

You would lose everything once you formatted it. Go check out ebay for a transfer cable. Found quite a few on there for the slim that are rather inexpensive.
