COD-Elite Style Service May Be Heading to Battlefield 3

News | March 15, 2012 1:26 pm
Love it or hate it, Call Of Duty may be the single most purchased, yearly-released non sports title in, well, ever! Getting there hands on the most successful shooter of this gen, Activision has the formula down pact. With the release of Modern Warfare 3, they've secured themselves the proverbial cash cow with tacking on a subscription service to their series. Despite the hang ups, and timed-release exclusivity deals, you have to admit it is an elegant way to continuously churn out DLC while still turning a profit. Could Call of Duty: Elite set a new standard for subscription services that other developers will follow suit? EA seems to think so, as they are looking into the possibility of a similarly styled service for their Battlefield series.

Speaking with EA Studio general manager Patrick Soderlund, Venturebeat.com asked about the prospect of such a service. Solderlund had this to say:

"I think it's fair to say that we're looking at that.

“Like all other companies, we're looking at how we can maximize our investment in this and get the most out of our investment and get more people playing this product. That may take us to different places, but we're not really talking about where that is yet.

"We look at it as a 24/7 service. We have people in Stockholm and North America and other parts of the world that are on this every single hour of every single day. 365 days a year...

"We have an operations team at DICE to look at telemetry data. How are people playing the game, how can we improve the experience? Are they having problems? Are servers down? Are they up? All that stuff."

So is this what the future holds for DLC updates? Will we soon have several yearly subscription services on top of our Xbox Live Gold memberships to contend with? How do you feel about a yearly charge to obtain all of a title's DLC?
