Pings don't measure speed. They measure network latency. That said, network latency does influence speed.
I've noticed this myself as well, and I'm not sure what the cause is. I'll try talking to my host and checking for anything I can optimize. It may be that we'll need to upgrade to a new server. Hopefully it won't come to that.

I took a look at the numbers and there was only a marginal increase in traffic. We actually regularly had more traffic back in July 2009.
