I am getting excited for Age of Empires online after participating in the beta. I want to remind everyone that it will release August 16th for FREE! It can be downloaded from xbox.com or Games for Windows LIVE client onto almost any computer running Windows XP or higher. I want to get a group of XBA players together to co-op missions and promise to shop in each others stores so everyone gets the 5% tax. I have preordered the paid Greek civilization on top of playing the free Egyptian civ and plan to buy the pro Persian civ this holiday. I will also get the first booster, the co-op Defence of Crete mission, if anyone wants to tackle it with me. Anyone else plan on playing?

I was kinda excited/thinking about looking into it when I first thought it was actually going to be free, then I saw that it's only initially free and you actually have to buy everything to get the full experience and achieves much like the game room. Undecided still, I'll play the free version and decide on the premium stuff afterwards.

I know what you mean, with cheevos stating "with premium content." A suggestion for you would be play for free, leveling up, til the paid pack goes on sale, which we know will happen at some point, and buy it to instantly get all the cheevos for that civ! The paid packs are a little overrated anyway, not much more to them over the free play. I imagine at some point in the future, there will be combo packs of paid civs and booster that will be a great deal. I only bought the paid Greek pack for the preorder bonus...

from what I have seen through beta and forums, the free model allows you to level just the same as paid civs, all the way to 40. They must expect most players to begin as free, then upgrade to paid, so I assume it will automatically unlock the cheevos already completed, aka which level of 10 you made it to before upgrading.
