Actually, from looking at the achievements, it sounds more like you can get this acheivement throughout the campaign as well.

Yeah you can get the acheivement through the campaign. I got the Seven-six Two Millimeter acheivement while playing through it. As everyone know thats the 250 kills with the Assault Rifle.
