For those of you who count down the life of a console based on the standard 4 years, you might want to do some recalculating. According to Microsoft president Robbie Bach its getting harder to persuade people to upgrade. He accredits part of this to the current recession but also to the quality of graphics on the current console generation.
"Just coming up with something that's faster and prettier isn't going to be sufficient," said Bach. "The life cycle for this generation of consoles — and I'm not just talking about XBox, I'd include Wii and PS3 as well — is probably going to be a little longer than previous generations."
The original XBox debuted in 2001 while the 360 came out in 2005. Unless they are just trying to throw the competition, it doesn't appear we should expect the next console to come out until at least late 2010, or further down the road. I for one am glad they are trying to extend the life a bit further as I didn't purchase the original Xbox until 2003 and the 360 in 2007. Plus I don't think I could afford any new consoles in the near future.
