Alright, first off, the story doesn't really make any sense, nor does it attempt to explain itself. Apparently, a ton of natural disasters occured lowering the world's population from 2006-2013. The final disaster, however, was not a natural disaster or an epidemic, but apparently demons came from....somewhere. Now they walk the Earth, killing the few humans left. These demons (Geists, as the game refers to them) are your main enemy in Bullet Witch.
You, are...a witch! A witch with a machine gun shaped like a broom. You can cast spells, and unload on these Geists with unlimited ammunition, powering up your spells and gun as you progress. You also have a strange voice talking to you throughout the game, again something that is never explained. You just have a voice from out of nowhere giving you advice...cool!
Alright, now, I didn't expect a lot from this game (It's a brand new 360 game released at $50 instead of $60), but I thought it could be fun, like GunGrave for the PS2. Unfortunatley...I was wrong.
The first thing I noticed (aside from the gaping plot holes) was that the controls were...well, awful. I mean bad. Being a third person shooter, there is absolutley no quick turn. Maybe I'm spoiled by Lost Planet's 90 degree turns with the push of a button, or Gears of War's lightning gameplay, but there was no quick turn to be found in Bullet Witch as far as I could tell. Secondly, no jump button! The left trigger acts as a dogde button, and, if you are really good, can rig it as a jump button, but there is no dedicated jump button. That's just rediculous for a game of this type. As for the dogde button, it too is very slow, and if you don't hit it at exactly the right time, it's not going to do you any good.
Second problem: The AI is awful. I've seen better AI in a PSOne game. The enemies are stupid, simply standing there and shooting at you, making no attempt to avoid your spray of bullets. One thing that I really didn't like is that a lot of normal enemies have one-hit kills. I don't know about you guys, but that just pisses me off and makes for a really frustrating gaming experience. I can understand when a couple of tought bosses have one-hit kills, but normal enemies you see in the game on a regular basis? Rediculous.
On the plus side, the environments are really nice, and there are a few destructible things, but they are far from fully destructible. The spells are cool, though again, thanks to shoddy controls they are a bit difficult to get the hang of. You can power up your spells and your gun, eventually getting different guns to choose, but that is pretty pointless since you're not going to want to use anything but the machine gun you start out with.
All in all, I have to give Bullet Witch a 2 out of 10. It does have the cool spells you can use, and the environments look pretty nice in HD, but poor controls, bad AI, and plot holes galore make it a really frustrating experience.
