Haven't started Mass Effect, and only did the training mission in CoD4, but based on every worthwhile title released this year... it's got to be either The Orange Box or Assassin's Creed.
But once I get into the other two games, my opinions can certainly change.

For me it's either Rock Band, Mass Effect, The Orange Box, or Assassin's Creed. Zomg too many good games! I'll just go with rock band right now cause I've been playing it the longest, and I'm more addicted to it than the others currently. However, I haven't really even played a dud that came out this year, what a great year for gaming this has been.. except for Halo 3.

Bioshock ~ All my friends have played Bioshock and say its amazing but I have yet to play it...they say that one ending is alright, the other amazing.
COD4 ~ compared to 3 perfect, compared to 2 almost equal...COD4 obviously has better graphics...the story was great and veteran made it tough but not too tough as to where you couldnt beat it.
Assassin's Creed ~ Gets too repetitive, great graphics, fun but one time through is enough...
Mass Effect ~ Just started to play it...I'm 5 hours into the game and I've hardly done anything but it feels like ive done everything...Awesome graphics with the best dialogue system I've ever seen. Reminds of KOTOR but with better graphics and better gameplay.
Halo 3 ~ Single Player is the reason why Halo 3 will not win game of the year...Single player was only played to finish the fight and get achievements. It wasnt fun, yeah if you got friends together and did 4-player Co-op then yeah, pretty fun but other than that, no.
Multiplayer is amazing, very addicting, and the best matchmaking system out there...and if you say well (insert game) has a better matchmaking system...which had it first, that game or halo 2?
