XBLA Wednesday: The Maw

News | January 20, 2009 10:47 am
Well, after a week long hiatus we are once again greeted with Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday. Up this week for our gaming pleasure? Twisted Pixel's "The Maw". While reading the short description, all I could think of was how much it sounded like a Metroid rip-off. Looking into it a little more deeply, however, it looks like it is an interesting game all it's own.

Apparently, The Maw is already a fairly well-known game; it has been one of the "audience choice" award winners at PAX last year, as well as being a finalist in the 2009 Independent Games Festival. Check out the description, straight from xbox.com:

The pinnacle of alien evolution, Maw is a cowardly fat blob concerned mostly with snacking and lounging. He can, however, absorb the traits of anything he eats, is virtually indestructible, and can grow to unlimited size. If he wasn't a danger to all life in the universe, he'd make the perfect pet. In the action/adventure game The Maw, he's the best friend of our hero Frank, and only by working together, can Maw help eat their way to freedom. The Maw was honored with the Audience Choice Award in the 2008 PAX-10 showcase of independent games, and is a finalist at the 2009 Independent Games Festival for Technical Excellence.

Features:

-The power of The Maw: Feed Maw a variety of different creatures and make him grow to help get through levels. Use Frank's plasma leash to control the indestructible Maw, as he grows, evolves, and gains new powers that can be used to get rid of enemies and solve level puzzles.

-The teamwork of Frank and Maw: Frank and Maw must help each other to solve puzzles and get through each area. Frank's plasma leash can be attached to Maw as well as creatures and other objects to slam and toss things around.
Action and adventure: This single-player story-driven game features eight full levels with different puzzles and power creatures throughout.

-Musical score: The original music score was created by God of War composer Winifred Phillips.

Looks like its worth checking out; I don't know how good a game that has its musical score as one of the features can be, but its at least worth a demo run.

I am giving the game away for free. Twisted Pixel Games, the creators behind the game, The MAW, have given me redemption codes to give away. PM me to find out how.

Why doesn't XboxAmerica.com do this?? Give away free content? Do they need a PR or do their members just do it for them (TK)?

I think it's more of a PR thing.

I guess it is.

Why doesn't XboxAmerica.com give away free games and/or content? You obviously have a big enough member base.

You would think that up-and-coming development studios would be rushing towards the big fan base that is Xbox America to promote and sell their games here, yet their isn't anything unless a member does it. Why?

LOL! REALLY?
No it isn't. I do it monthly and they are more than happy to give it away for sites way smaller than XboxAmerica.com

To answer that, I believe that this may be because Xbox America isn't really as advertised as some websites. I stumbled upon the website by clicking on a Leaderboard card.

Also, I am sure Witness spends most of his time coding and debugging the site while the Writers submit and approve News/Articles.

In other words, with all the employees (or staff), nobody actually contacts game developers / studios ??

REALLY?

Well if none of the powers that be mind, (The XBA Staff) and VanIslePimp wants to, maybe me and him together can do weekly mass e-mails to studios for free stuff and randomly give it away to the members of XBA. It can be like a weekly "pick someone name from the virtual barrel" type thing. What do you think about that Pimp, show me how we can could do this!!

I'm sorry, but getting redemption codes to petty arcade games isn't at the top of any of our agendas. Does that answer your question?

You do seem to be rather confused considering the sheer number of times you asked the question and exclaimed "REALLY!?"

If any members want us to begin requesting these codes, they can PM me telling me so, but Xbox America's focus is not on arcade games like XboxLiveArcade.com's is. We only contact publishers for promotional material for retail games.

idk some arcade games are ok. Castle Crasher is loads of fun (i still have yet to beat it -_-) and there are some other good ones from what ive heard.

VIP, if you wanna try and do it here i dont think anyone would stop you, but im not sure how successful it might be, cause alot of people here arent very big on arcade games. but give it a shot if you want.
