XBOX ONE Kinect Not Required!

News | August 12, 2013 11:30 pm
Xbox One will now operate just fine without Kinect plugged in. Certain features will be lost, but your console won't become a brick if Kinect isn't connected.

This will hopefully, as the article mentions, be good news for those wanting a cheaper, Kinect free retail package. The article asks how the "security conscious" feel about the possibility of a Xbox One Kinect free offering. Microsoft and the press have not addressed the issue of remaining a competitive choice to those consumers who will, eventually, want to purchase multiple consoles. A bigger concern of many consumers is the cost of purchasing multiple consoles and being forced to pay increased costs for a device they have no desire to use in other gaming situations. Currently, our Xbox with Kinect is set up in the family room. Our family, especially the kids, enjoy playing Kinect games there. However, our other Xbox (Kinect free) is set up in my home office where I play MP and M rated games my young children do not need to be exposed to.

Major nelson said on twitter that MS has no plans to put out a kinectless bundle & that they're "all in with kinect"

Looks like I'm sticking with PS4 then, no Kinect was the only thing that would make me buy an XB1.

Forbes' situation likely never crossed the minds of the development team, just like the "always on" internet connection, with the US military. It took 2 seconds for that problem to reveal itself, because we live in a more closed off, isolated, and singular society, even though we're "always on", many of us don't even know our neighbors IRL, & don't think outside our own personal space-- so these gaming situations never entered devs' minds.

They didn't think about the military not being allowed private internet access at all times, or the situation of being a father not wanting their kids to see zombies' heads exploding-- or the possibility someone on your chat party can scream profanity, or talk about sexual situations.

I don't think a Kinect-free bundle is a good idea, either. Knowing 100% of consoles come with a kinect, is just like having another button. Does the 3DS circle pad pro (2 sticks) get a lot of developer use, when they know less than half the users have it?

Considering the huge success of the 360, they could have afforded to take a little hit off initial sales, until technology catches up. Instead of their head in the sand, they should have realized how the Kinect comes across to gamers, & they should have anticipated that Sony would release the PS4 for lower than $600, since the $599 PS3 got Sony into a mess. $499 was probably what they thought Sony was targeting, & they could spin the marketing that you're getting Kinect free.

When the facts from E3 came around, they should have used ONE press conference to announce all the changes, instead of trickling them out. Moving the price down to $399 would have still essentially still given us "Kinect free", so it would be a non issue, like they thought. Instead, all that money will be wasted in marketing damage control.

BUT, comparatively, both consoles are still cheaper than they could have been...

But kinect sucks, so how exactly is it a bad thing for less people developing for it? There has not (IMO) been a decent game for kinect that wouldn't have been as good or better without it. It's a gimmick. And there will be a kinect free sku if the xb1 doesn't sell like crazy.

I think ms has thought of all the situations, they just didn't care. Like seriously, I think they say "tough shit, we're Microsoft," when any problems come up. What they didn't count on was not being able to differentiate between the vocal minority and the majority. They thought most people were always on because the ones who post on the Internet are. And I doubt that soldiers not being able to play when they are deployed crossed their minds when they were backtracking. It's about money. And preorder sales. And manipulating people.

And sheesh, Lord Forbes, put your children to bed. ;p We have multiple (like 12) consoles currently, and not a one in any room but the family room- except the dead ones in the garage. Dead Space and Saints Row wait til bedtime. I don't think the $100 between kinect and non-kinect will make the difference you expect as far as cost for multiple consoles...all the same I'd like not having the stupid thing shoved down my throat multiple times.

Kinect interacting in tandem with Microsoft's Oculus-like VR glasses in a few years, would make it worthwhile:

Kinectimals was a fantastic kids game that benefited greatly from the Kinect. It might be the shiniest gem amongst petrified horse ****. But that's at least 1 good Kinect game.

I believe it SHOULD be a optional addition to the console and a cheaper non Kinect version should be available as they are forcing you to pay for it regardless of it's worth to you.
