Rumoured Kinect-Enabled Gears of War Development Scrapped

News | April 10, 2012 2:00 pm
Fans of Gears of War should continue to enjoy all the third installment has to offer, as it doesn't look like a new outing for the COG is planned any time soon. Gears Dev Epic Games let slip, recently, that another installment is no longer in development. Aptly titled Gears of War: Exile, many rumors abound that it was meant to be an on-rails Kinect title. Speaking to Gamespot, Cliff Bleszinski had this un-revealing tidbit to say:

Gears of War: Exile was an unannounced game that I can't give any details about that has since been cancelled,

The public face of Epic Games and the Gears franchise, Bleszinski has made mention of combining Gears with the Kinect. He has insisted that a game utilizing the Kinect technology would have to be built from the ground up. Last year he made mention of the thought of using the tech in Gears 3:

I've been asked about integration into Gears. If we had put it into Gears 3, considering the development time table, it would have been a tacked-on feature. If we were to get around to doing something Kinect-based, we would want to dedicate something to it and really knock it out the park and make it a Kinect game.

Having not even scratched the DLC of Gears 3, I am glad to hear there will not be another installment any time soon. And I am no fan of Cliff B, but this is one of the rare moments where I will agree with him; anything appealing to core gamers that utilizes the Kinect to its full potential would need to be built from the ground up. It will be interesting to see what the upcoming years produce as far as Kinect-titles, as the technology is still in its infancy.

And speaking of scrapped Epic titles, it appears that Bulletstorm 2 was in development, but Epic has recently decided against it. Polish developer People Can Fly had begun some initial development on the sequel to the over-the-top shooter, however Epic decided to concentrate the developer's efforts on an as-of-yet unannounced title. Mike Capps, president of Epic Games, had this to say:

We thought a lot about a sequel, and had done some initial development on it, but we found a project that we thought was a better fit for People Can Fly...We haven't announced that yet, but we will be announcing it pretty soon.

Capps has previously expressed wanting to return to Bulletstorm, stating that he thought there was more to do with it. Last year, however, he did let slip that Bulletstorm performed less than stellar as far as EA was concerned.

I think Bulletstorm was very critically successful, and I think a lot of folks really enjoyed seeing something new... From a sales perspective it was good, but not amazing. I think EA was hoping we'd do better.

Again, I'm not a fan of Epic Games in general, but I did enjoy my romp through Bulletstorm. The change up to style and over the top potty humor was a nice break. If you've played the title, though, you do know that it is clearly not for everyone, and it comes as no surprise that the title did not earn the money EA expected. Of course, coming off the heels of Gears' commercial success, EA probably expected another million-seller from the studio. Only time will tell if we will see a return to Bulletstorm.

I think this is a bad idea... I know that a Kinect version of Gears or Bulletstorm seems like it would be fun, but after putting a bunch of hours into Kinect Star Wars, I think people might underestimate how exhausting it is to play an entire game through Kinect. -_-

I can barely do 4-5 adventures in a row in Kinect Adventures. It's ridiculous. If there's a lot of squatting, quick left to right movements and so on the average person will be sweating and struggling to complete easy timed events in about 30-40 minutes.

I played Kinectimals for about an hour and a half this morning and my arms are sore from throwing frisbees and petting my damn cat. I'm also really tired from running those damned obstacle courses.

Star Wars is frustrating because you don't have the lightsaber, so your motion is faster than the people you fight, who are animated like they're holding a hefty lightsaber. The timing is hard to get down, and the crouching, leaning, jumping is rough. Kinect Adventures was brutal, and I was in better shape back then!!!!

Someone better tell Cliffy B that the Kinect doesn't have God mode....

Only if you don't have a lightsaber to use. Which I might have :nerd:

A lot of the Kinect games are brutal for those of us who are out of shape. I sweat like crazy doing some of the games. Though the good thing about that is at least I'm getting a workout!

On the topic of the news, can't say I have strong feelings one way or the other on this. I think it would have been interesting to see a GoW on the Kinect, yet at the same time knowing how Epic is with achievements, that might have put a damper on me getting the game. I play enough bad/mediocre games as it is, no need to pick up a questionable Kinect game with hard achievements.
